Jay has spent over 15 years as an educator with the York Region District School Board. His past experiences include being a program director at Camp Manitou, a professor at York University, a researcher at Sick Kids Hospital, as well as an educator at The York Centre. His vision for the STEAM Project is to create and expand the program to inquisitive children, and to give the opportunities unavailable to him as a child.

Express every part of your creativity with the wide range of crafts available at our makerspace! From ceramics and copper enameling to fashion design and epoxy art, we have the crafts that kids want to do, and we’re always adding more! Our team of caring instructors will help your children gain the skills they want to express themselves and empower them with the tools to create their own art. They’re not getting this in school!
Learn how to use hand tools such as hammers, saws, drills, and soldering irons to create the perfect toy, game, or gadget that you’ve always wanted! Bring creativity and skills together in the workshop where we have all of the woodworking tools, electronics, art supplies, and more to help your kid build any project they want.
Create designs for your clothing or projects and see them being developed in our vinyl or laser cutters. Watch as the laser cuts out your detailed sketches onto wood, plastic, fabric, and more! Kids will learn the basics of graphic design while improving their sense of symmetry, balance, and shape.
Bring your ideas to life by modelling them using computer programs including Tinkercad and AutoCAD. Kids will improve their visual-spatial sense and awareness through designing and printing complex geometric objects using our 3D printers or by hand with multi-coloured 3D pens
From Ozobots to battlebots to drones, we’ve got them all! Learn how to design, build, and code your very own robot. Start with basic skills including digital logics and block-based coding. Then work your way up towards using Arduinos and learning advanced programming languages like C++ and Python!
Learn the science that powers everything around you, from refrigerators to cars to even rockets! Kids will get to experiment and explore electricity, its source, and its applications in both the real world and in their own projects.
Project Director
James (Jay) Wengle, MSc, B.Ed has spent 10 years with the York Region District School Board as a High School Science teacher and has co-authored a health and nutrition book from his 4 years working in research/education at Sick Kids Hospital while working as a professor at York University. His vision for the STEAM Project is to create and expand the program to inquisitive children, and to give the opportunities unavailable to him as a child.

In the 20 years prior to his work with at-risk youth alongside The York Centre from 2007-2010, Jay spent his summers working with Camp Manitou as head of staff/director, program designer, and counselor. He has also produced curriculum for The Learning Partnership, CAPHERD, and Right To Play.
Administrative Director
Fascinated with technology, Ann Hu, Bsc (Hons), BEd, is devoted to spreading the appreciation of both math, science, and their importance in the developing brain. She has experience working with Camp Green Acres and has worked with several international language programs in both English and Mandarin.

She currently works with the York Region District School Board as a 12th Grade mathematics and science teacher, and receives the most fulfillment in her career as well as her 3 years working with The Steam Project every time a child has a Eureka! Moment.
Operational Director
Huron Chu, BSc (Hons), BEd, has been with the York Region District School Board for 8 years, teaching both math and science at the High School level. He is an official HIGH FIVE®-certified instructor, which is a nationally recognized certification from Canada’s quality standard for children’s developmental programs that is dedicated to providing a positive and effective experience for children and their education.
As an active member of the community, Huron has had 15 years of experience working with the City of Toronto as a coordinator and trainer and has worked to create solutions that will minimize the impact of waste to the planet.
“Not only in regards to recycling, but with new ideas and experimenting, I firmly believe in fixing things to improve them, rather than simply throwing them away. What I love about TSP is the opportunity to have real innovation arise, and facilitate the spark the children need to get them there.”
