The STEAM Project LIT program (for campers currently completing Grade 8)
Our LIT Program is geared towards our senior campers who are interested in taking on a leadership role at camp and further developing their technical skills while still being involved in our camper projects and activities. The STEAM Project LIT Program is a summer of fun with our staff, with other campers and with all our technology. It is also about beginning the transition from being a camper to being a staff member and role model to our younger campers. LITs who successfully complete the program will receive an LIT Program Certificate of Completion, and a reference letter from one of the Directors outlining their performance at camp.
Our ultimate goal is for our LITs is to have a fantastic summer and be prepared for leadership challenges either in their CIT year at The STEAM Project, or elsewhere in life. Our LITs will have a greater sense of responsibility, independence and accomplishment that will allow them to transfer their newly learned skills to the real world.
Areas of focus for The STEAM Project LIT Program
First and foremost, LITs work “hands on” with younger campers. Assisting our counsellors, our LITs are attached to a cabin where they will work with the counselors while learning to deal with different social, adjustment, and general welfare issues.
LITs are involved in general leadership training sessions presented by experienced camp leaders. These sessions focus on leadership theory and allows them to put theory into practice when working with campers both in the cabin and at activities.
Project Time: With the assistance of our instructors, LITs will plan and develop their own project based on their own interests and working with the tools and technology at camp that they are most interested in.
A TYPICAL DAY
What a typical day as a LIT looks like
In the morning, LITs stay with their assigned camper cabin, greeting their campers as they arrive to camp and working closely with the counsellors and instructors learning on the job how to deal with various camper issues and helping their campers to complete projects. It will be during these important times that they learn to effectively work with campers and build special relationships that will last for years. Additionally, LITs may choose to spend lunch time with their campers too.
During some afternoons, LITs will meet with their Leadership Coordinator as a group and focus on various camper issues or challenges being experienced at camp, or on practical applications of
leadership skills. They will learn about topics such as: Bullying, Managing behaviours, Risk Management, Group Dynamics, Leadership, Goal Setting, Time Management, Program Planning, Communication, Conflict Resolution, and more! LITs will also have time develop their own skills while working alongside our instructors assisting and teaching campers, planning and executing large camp-wide themes and events, and working on their own individual project(s).
